Getting to Pittsburgh

Pittsburgh is served by Pittsburgh International Airport (PIT) and is a hub for US Airways. The University of Pittsburgh, University Club, Wyndham Gardens, and Best Western Hotel are all located in the part of the city called Oakland. Transportation to Oakland can be via taxi (about $35), public transportation (take the 28X Airport Flyer), or hotel shuttle (the Holiday Inn maintains a shuttle service to its Oakland location). All 3 are located on the ground floor of the main terminal building, same level as the baggage claim.

The taxis are just outside the terminal along a curb. The taxi stand always has taxis waiting. The trip to Oakland (the community where the University is located) takes about 30 minutes.

Buses stop at the same curb as the taxis, just outside the baggage area and a little distance away. They take about 50 minutes to reach Oakland and cost $2.25 (exact change only). They leave approximately every 20 minutes. They have stops through Oakland along Forbes Ave. and most drivers are nice enough to help you find the right stop. The Wyndham Gardens is at corner of McKee Place and Forbes. The University Club is on Thackeray Street which does not go through to Forbes. You should get off at Bouquet Street and walk slightly uphill to Fifth Ave which intersects with Thackeray. For Best Western, get off at Halket and Forbes, then walk a few blocks to the right. See Oakland map on main conference page.

The Oakland hotel shuttle goes to Holiday Inn every hour on the hour. It costs $17 and takes about 40 minutes. The other hotels are a short walk from there (see Oakland map). They have a desk close to the baggage area.

Driving directions

If you arrive late, there are many restaurants within walking distance serving a wide variety of food. A simple method is to walk along Forbes or Fifth Avenues, Oakland St and Atwood St. have good places. Keep in mind that the airport restaurants are required to keep prices in line with the local community.
